What is Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga?
Based on a traditional healing system, Kum Nye Yoga helps to relieve stress, transform negative patterns and promote balance and health. Developed by Tibetan Lama Tarthang Tulku, this presentation of Kum Nye practices is thoroughly modern and adapted specifically to suit modern needs. The practice of Kum Nye includes stillness, movement, postures, breathing exercises, self-massage and a little bit of visualization. These practices address the three kinds of tension held in the body – 1) superficial tensions, 2) blockages in the energy channels, and 3) knots in the chakras.
Kum Nye exercises melt these tensions and life’s energies begin to flow more completely through the body. In the process the flowing of energy “washes” the filters in the senses, and we begin to sense more purely again instead of filtering experience through thoughts and memories. Thus, Kum Nye is both a healing practice and an exquisite preparation for establishing and sustaining internal calmness and clarity, the basis for samatha and vipassana practice. Kum Nye establishes a sense of wholeness in which it is easy to detect calmness. When we enter the calmness, meditation begins.
Why practice Kum Nye?
We all have memories of times when we felt particularly alive, when the world seemed fresh and promising, like a flower garden on a bright spring morning. Whatever the circumstances leading to such moments, there is suddenly a sensation of acute vitality supported by the knowledge that all elements are in absolute harmony. The air pulses with life. Our bodies feel healthy and energetic, our minds clear and confident. There is a lucent quality to perception. Every feature of the environment pleases the senses: colors are vivid, sounds melodious, and odors fragrant…we act with perfect ease and appropriateness.
The essence of this experience is balance, and its off-shoot is a deep feeling of nurturance and refreshment which extends far beyond the feeling we would call ‘happiness.’ Kum Nye is the art of developing this true balance. Through relaxation we can discover a whole new way of being, a perspective that delights in the integration of body, mind, senses, feelings, and environment. We learn to appreciate the completely wholesome quality of living experience. The whole body becomes refreshed, as if showered within by pure spring water. Not only the physical body quickens, but the mind and all of the senses are invigorated as well; sense impressions and thoughts come to life. A quality of relaxation informs every activity, even walking or eating. Our lives function smoothly, and we become healthy and balanced.
Who can practice Kum Nye?
The simple answer is: Anybody. The exercises of Kum Nye can be practiced safely by anyone, young or old. A range of products from DVDs and CDs to a full self-study course called eKum Nye are available to help anyone interested in exploring Kum Nye do so in a way that fits their interest level, schedule, and budget.
Generally, anyone interested in deepening their relation with their own body, in living a more balanced, joyful life style, exploring meditation, easing emotionality and stress in daily life, and/or understanding the body, mind and experience better are all possible candidates for Kum Nye study. As a guide to the pleasure of a healthy and balanced life, rich in beauty and enjoyment, leading to harmony for all beings, the practice of Kum Nye is open to all backgrounds and interests, and will assist in developing and continuing the experience of inner relaxation.

eKum Nye: For those who are interested in starting their own self-study or small group exploration of Kum Nye, we offer a free introductory lesson of Level 1 and Levels 6 to 10 of the eKum Nye program. eKum Nye offers an incredible depth of study and practice based on Kum Nye Yoga and Joy of Being. With 10 levels available the whole program provides over 2 years of self-study material that can be expanded upon through Kum Nye retreats and forms a central part of Kum Nye teacher training.
Take a class: We have several authorized centers in Europe and South America as well as the United States. If you are in San Francisco Bay area, you can take Kum Nye classes at the Tibetan Nyingma Institute.
Retreats and Seminars: Throughout the year we offer short seminars and extended retreat programs. Seminars are ideal for both getting introduced to Kum Nye and deepening your practice study. Where you are and right now! The moment practice begins, you are planting the seed of a healthy, positive attitude. Intrinsic to the practice of Kum Nye is the decision to find satisfaction within yourself. Nourish this positive attitude and it will grow, developing and increasing your sense of balance, happiness, and relaxation.
You can practice in the comfort of your home, you only need loose, comfortable clothing and a cushion for sitting that enables your pelvis to be higher than your legs or a straight backed chair if you prefer. You can start right now by learning about the 7 point seated posture called the Seven Gestures which is the starting point for developing your Kum Nye practice. From there you can check out a sample exercise from Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga, one from The Joy of Being, a Kum Nye Dancing performance, and even get an introduction to Self-Massage!
We also offer 6 free introductory e-Kum Nye Lessons that each will give you a structure for a 1 hour practice session combined with theory to help deepen your understanding and engagement with the exercises.
